Dr. Shamsul Mohd Zain is an associate professor at the Department of Pharmacology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya. He leads the Pharmacogenomics Laboratory. His research centers on clinical and molecular hepatology, pharmacogenomics, and omics-based approaches, with particular emphasis on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), also known as fatty liver disease. He is actively engaged in advancing research on MASLD with a focus on translational applications in primary care settings. Currently, he is part of a multidisciplinary team addressing various MASLD populations, including MASLD in individuals living with HIV and chronic kidney disease. By integrating molecular research, clinical innovation, and public health application, Dr. Shamsul is helping to shape Malaysia’s research agenda on MASLD and is contributing significantly to the pursuit of precision medicine in liver disease.
