Datuk Dr Muhammad Radzi bin Abu Hassan began his medical career in 1991 at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital and became a consultant physician and gastroenterologist in 2001. He later served as Malaysia’s Director-General of Health until retirement, following roles including Deputy Director-General (Research and Technical Support), National Head of Service for Internal Medicine, and for Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
He played a pivotal role in shaping national healthcare policy across multiple disease areas, notably spearheading Malaysia’s hepatitis C strategy and advancing its global leadership in delivering cost-free, decentralized treatment. An active researcher with over 100 publications, he was listed among the world’s top 2% scientists in 2025. His work includes major clinical trials improving affordable hepatitis C therapies.
Dr Radzi also championed universal health coverage, sustainability, and green healthcare initiatives, helping drive Malaysia’s carbon-neutral healthcare blueprint. His leadership earned him multiple recognitions, including a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025 by RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in 2025.
